A Look at the Tri-State’s Active Fault LineMonday, March 14, 2011By Bob HennellyThe Ramapo Fault is the longest fault in the Northeast that occasionally makes local headlines when minor tremors cause rock the Tri-State region. It begins in Pennsylvania, crosses the Delaware River and continues through Hunterdon, Somerset, Morris, Passaic and Bergen counties before crossing the Hudson River near Indian Point nuclear facility.In the past, it has generated occasional activity that generated a 2.6 magnitude quake in New Jersey’s Peakpack/Gladstone area and 3.0 magnitude quake in Mendham.But the New Jersey-New York region is relatively seismically stable according to Dr. Dave Robinson, Professor of Geography at Rutgers. Although it does have activity.„There is occasional seismic activity in New Jersey,“ said Robinson. „There have been a few quakes locally that have been felt and done a little bit of damage over the time since colonial settlement — some chimneys knocked down in Manhattan with a quake back in the 18th century, but nothing of a significant magnitude.“Robinson said the Ramapo has on occasion registered a measurable quake but has not caused damage: „The Ramapo fault is associated with geological activities back 200 million years ago, but it’s still a little creaky now and again,“ he said.„More recently, in the 1970s and early 1980s, earthquake risk along the Ramapo Fault received attention because of its proximity to Indian Point,“ according to the New Jersey Geological Survey website.Historically, critics of the Indian Point Nuclear facility in Westchester County, New York, did cite its proximity to the Ramapo fault line as a significant risk.In 1884, according to the New Jersey Geological Survey website, the  Rampao Fault was blamed for a 5.5 quake that toppled chimneys in New York City and New Jersey that was felt from Maine to Virginia.„Subsequent investigations have shown the 1884 Earthquake epicenter was actually located in Brooklyn, New York, at least 25 miles from the Ramapo Fault,“ according to the New Jersey Geological Survey website.

Hamas calls to resist Israeli settlement project in West Bank

Palestinian group Hamas on Sunday called to resist Israeli plans to build more than 4,000 settlement units in the occupied West Bank.

Last week, Israeli authorities approved the construction of more than 4,000 settlement units, in a move that drew wide condemnation from several countries around the world.

In a statement, Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum called the settlement building a “new assault” against the Palestinian people.

“This affirms the racist and colonial nature of the occupying entity (Israel),” he said as he called to resist “these colonial and settlement projects with all means.”

The spokesperson also called for ending all forms of normalization with Israel and “working for isolating the Zionist occupation and exposing its policies and supporting Palestinian steadfastness.”

The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is considered occupied territory under international law, thus making all Jewish settlements there illegal.

Meanwhile, Hamas on Saturday condemned Israeli settler calls to storm the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem, describing the move as a “dangerous escalation.”

“The calls to storm Al-Aqsa, on the anniversary of the Nakba, are a dangerous escalation, and a provocation to the sentiments of our people and our nation,” Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said in a statement.

He warned that the settler provocations will trigger “an open clash that the Zionist occupation (Israel) will be fully responsible for its consequences.”

Settler groups have called on supporters to force their way into the Al-Aqsa complex on Sunday, which coincides with the Palestinian Nakba Day.

Observed on May 15 annually, Nakba Day, or the Catastrophe Day, marks the 1948 forced expulsion of nearly 800,000 Palestinians from their homes in historical Palestine to pave the way for the creation of the state of Israel.

Qassem described the recurring setter incursions into Al-Aqsa complex as “desperate attempts that will not succeed in imposing a fait accompli and changing the facts of history that Al-Aqsa Mosque is Palestinian, Arab, and Islamic.”

He also called on the Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and in Israel to head to Al-Aqsa Mosque to “thwart the plans of the occupation.”

Tensions have been running high across the occupied Palestinian territories since last month amid repeated Israeli arrest campaigns in the West Bank and settler incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in East Jerusalem.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world’s third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area the Temple Mount, claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. It annexed the entire city in 1980, in a move never recognized by the international community.

Palestine condemns E. Jerusalem cable car project

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Sunday condemned an Israeli court decision to approve a cable car project in the occupied East Jerusalem.

A ministry statement termed the cable car project as “an integral part of Israel’s Judaization campaign in Jerusalem with a view to eroding its Palestinian, Islamic and Christian identity.”

“The court decision is another proof that the court system is part of the Israeli occupation to serve its settlement and Judaization plans,” the ministry said.

It went on to appeal to the U.S. administration and the international community to pile pressure on Israel to halt the project in the occupied city.

Israel’s Supreme Court on Sunday rejected petitions against the construction of the project, which extends over 1.4 kilometers from the Mount of Olives area, adjacent to Jerusalem’s Old City, to the Al-Maghariba Gate, one of the Old City’s main gates near Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Russian state television has said Moscow may deploy tactical nuclear weapons to its European borders if Finland and Sweden allow military bases on their territory after joining NATO.

Sweden’s Social Democrats yesterday said they had dropped their opposition to NATO membership only hours after Finland confirmed its intention to join the alliance.

Vladimir Putin-supporting pundits responded with more sabre-rattlling on Russian state TV last night.  

A commentator on Rossiya One said: ‘Their official reason is fear. But they’ll have more fear in Nato. 

‘When Nato bases appear in Sweden & Finland, Russia will have no choice but to neutralise the imbalance & new threat by deploying tactical nuclear weapons.’ 

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s security council, said weeks ago that Russia could deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in its Kaliningrad exclave between Poland and Lithuania, in responce to NATO’s Nordic expansion.

One of the original supposed rationales for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February was to stop Nato enlargement – but that plan is now in tatters as both Scandinavian nations say they will seek membership of the alliance.

Stockholm’s formal application is expected to start later today after being debated and approved by MPs. Sweden, which was neutral during the Second World War and has stayed out of military alliances for more than 200 years 

The turnaround by prime minister Magdalena Andersson’s party, which has opposed Nato membership since the start of the alliance, secures a firm majority in Sweden’s parliament in favour of joining. 

Mrs Andersson said she would consult parliament today before announcing her government’s official intention to apply.

‘Europe, Sweden and the Swedish public are living a new and dangerous reality,’ said Ms Andersson, announcing the decades-long policy U-turn. ‘The best thing for the security of Sweden and the Swedish people is to join Nato.’

Many Swedish politicians said their support was conditional on Finland joining.

Finnish president confirms country will seek to join NATO

‘The party board has at its meeting on May 15, 2022 decided that the party will work toward Sweden applying for membership in NATO,’ the Social Democrats said in a statement.

Sweden, which was neutral during the Second World War, stayed out of military alliances for more than 200 years though it forged closer ties with the Brussels-based organisation from the 1990s.

The turnaround by Mrs Andersson’s party, which has opposed Nato membership since the start of the alliance, secures a firm majority in Sweden’s parliament in favour of joining.

Coming less than three months after Vladimir Putin ordered his troops into Ukraine on February 24, the move from the two nations is a stunning reversal of their military non-alignment policies – and paves the way for the 30-member Western military alliance to expand.

Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin made their announcement at a joint news conference at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki.

The Finnish Parliament is expected to endorse the decision in coming days, but it is considered a formality following a swell in public support for doing so.

A formal membership application will then be submitted to NATO headquarters in Brussels, most likely at the some point next week.

Speaking during a NATO conference in Berlin today, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken voiced confidence that NATO members would support the bid, after Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed last-minute objections. 

‘I heard almost across the board, very strong support for Finland and Sweden joining the alliance, if that’s what they choose to do, and I’m very confident that we will reach consensus,’ he said from the German capital.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also said on Sunday that Turkey is not blocking potential membership bids by Sweden and Finland and voiced confidence at resolving Ankara’s stated concerns.

‘Turkey made it clear that its intention is not to block membership,’ Stoltenberg said. 

The two nonaligned Nordic nations becoming part of the alliance would pose an affront to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has justified the war in Ukraine by claiming it was a response to NATO’s expansion in Eastern Europe. 

Finland shares a 830-mile border with Russia. Should Finland’s application be ratified, Russia’s border with NATO would roughly double in length.

Yesterday, Putin told the President of Finland he is making a ‘mistake’ by joining NATO as it faces ‘no security threats’ in a phone call.

President Niinistö said his conversation with Putin was ‘conducted without aggravations’ as both parties worked to ‘avoid tensions’.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and cyber-attacks on Finland and Sweden have ‘altered the security environment’ in Helsinki, Putin was told. 

Meanwhile, Western military officials said Sunday that Moscow’s campaign in Ukraine, believed to have been launched with the goal of seizing Kyiv and toppling the Ukrainian government, had slowed to a snail’s pace. They said the invading Russian army had lost up to one-third of its combat strength since February.

‘Today, the President of the Republic and the Government’s Foreign Policy Committee have jointly agreed that Finland will apply for NATO membership, after consulting parliament. This is a historic day. A new era is opening’, Niinisto said.

‘We have reached today an important decision in good cooperation with the government and the president of the republic. We hope the parliament will confirm the decision to apply for the NATO membership during the coming days. It will be based on a strong mandate’, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said.

Finland has remained militarily non-aligned for 75 years.

But after its powerful eastern neighbour invaded Ukraine in February, political and public opinion swung dramatically in favour of membership, with the Finnish president and prime minister on Thursday calling for the country to join NATO ‘without delay’.

Russia has repeatedly warned of consequences if Helsinki joins the alliance, but earlier this week, Niinisto told reporters that ‘joining NATO would not be against anyone.’ He said his response to Russia is: ‘You caused this. Look in the mirror.’

NATO’s deputy chief said on Sunday that the alliance is confident that it can overcome objections by Turkey and quickly admit Finland and Sweden.

Foreign ministers from NATO’s 30 member states are holding two days of talks this weekend in Berlin that are focused on the two Nordic countries’ membership bids.

However on Saturday, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu unexpectedly raised objections, saying it was ‘unacceptable and outrageous’ that the prospective new NATO members gave support to the outlawed Kurdish militant group PKK.

It was not immediately clear whether discussions between Cavusoglu and several NATO foreign ministers as well as their Finnish and Swedish counterparts later in the evening had yielded any progress in resolving the dispute.

As talks resumed on Sunday, NATO’s Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoana said he was confident Ankara’s concerns could be addressed.

‘Turkey is an important ally and expressed concerns that are addressed between friends and allies,’ Geoana told reporters.

‘I am confident if these countries decide to seek membership in NATO we will be able to welcome them, to find all conditions for consensus to be met,’ he added.

‘Finland and Sweden are already the closest partners of NATO,’ Geoana said.

Geoana also told reporters: ‘The brutal invasion (by) Russia is losing momentum. We know that with the bravery of the Ukrainian people and army, and with our help, Ukraine can win this war.’

Geoana, who was chairing the meeting while NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recovers from a COVID-19 infection, said Ukraine’s supporters were ‘united, we are strong, will continue to help Ukraine in winning this war.’

Many allies at the Berlin meeting backed Finland and Sweden, stressing the need for swift ratification of their membership bids, which typically take up to a year.

‘Germany has prepared everything to do a quick ratification process,’ Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told reporters, adding that ministers had agreed at a dinner on Saturday that the momentum should not be lost.

‘We must make sure that we will give them security guarantees, there must not be a transition period, a grey zone, where their status is unclear,’ she said.

She was referring to the ratification period during which the Nordic countries would not yet be protected by NATO’s Article 5, which guarantees that an attack on one ally is an attack on all.

Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly echoed Baerbock’s comments, saying she hoped it could be done ‘within weeks’.

Despite last-minute objections voiced by Turkey, NATO members are on ‘good track’ in their discussions on welcoming Sweden and Finland into the Western military alliance, Croatia’s foreign minister, Gordan Grlic Radman, said as he arrived for talks.

The allies, who were joined on Sunday by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, discussed the issue of interim security guarantees for Sweden and Finland, whose plans have drawn threats of retaliation from Moscow.

Russia regards NATO expansion as a threat to its own security and cited Ukraine’s ambition to join the alliance as a reason for launching what it calls a ‘special military operation’ in its southern neighbour.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba was due to join Sunday’s talks to brief the allies on the situation on the ground and NATO support for Kyiv.

Kuleba said he met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Berlin on Sunday and that ‘more weapons and other aid is on the way to Ukraine’.

‘We agreed to work closely together to ensure that Ukrainian food exports reach consumers in Africa and Asia. Grateful to Secretary Blinken and the US for their leadership and unwavering support,’ Kuleba tweeted.

The two men discussed the impact of Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, including on global food security, US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said.

‘The Secretary conveyed details regarding the latest tranche of U.S. security assistance to bolster Ukraine’s defences,’ Price said.  

The ministers will also look at a first draft of NATO’s new strategic concept, its basic military doctrine, which is set to be agreed at a leaders summit in Madrid at the end of June.

‘We agreed we must continue to help Ukraine win and push Russia out,’ British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said.

‘(Russian President Vladimir) Putin must face a sustained defeat in Ukraine, Russia must be contained and such aggression must never happen again.’

Ukraine, meanwhile, celebrated a morale-boosting victory in the Eurovision Song Contest. The folk-rap ensemble Kalush Orchestra won the glitzy, televised Eurovision contest with its song ‘Stefania,’ which has become a popular anthem among Ukrainians during the war. 

Votes from home viewers across Europe cemented the victory.

President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed his nation would claim the customary honor of hosting the next annual competition. ‘Step by step, we are forcing the occupiers to leave the Ukrainian land,’ Zelensky said.

Russian and Ukrainian fighters are engaged in a grinding battle for the country’s eastern industrial heartland, the Donbas.

Russia has now likely lost one-third of the ground combat forces it committed in February and continues to suffer ‘consistently high levels of attrition’ while failing to achieve any substantial territorial gains over the past month, Britain’s Defence Ministry said in its daily intelligence update Sunday.

‘Russia’s Donbas offensive has lost momentum and fallen significantly behind schedule,’ the ministry said on Twitter, adding that the forces are suffering ‘continued low morale and reduced combat effectiveness.’

‘Under the current conditions, Russia is unlikely to dramatically accelerate its rate of advance over the next 30 days,’ the ministry said.

Satellite pictures reveal China’s disturbing missiles plan

New satellite photos show what China’s plan could be for their powerful hypersonic missiles – and the entire world should be worried.

Australia has been accused of “napping at the wheel” while China has amassed a devastating arsenal of hi-tech, long-range weapons.

Watch out Pearl Harbor: last year, satellites caught Beijing building mock-ups of warships in the desert.

Now a new batch reveals some represented ships in port – with craters proving they can be picked out from among the clutter of piers and docks.

Do the new satellite photos reveal China may be planning a new “day of infamy”?

A United States Naval Institute (USNI) report argues commercial satellite photos show China’s People’s Liberation Army is developing a disturbing new military capability: hypersonic missiles that can identify and hit warships sitting idle in their home ports.

It’s a scenario with shades of Japan’s devastating December 7, 1941, surprise assault on Pearl Harbor.

Warship shapes were spotted by satellite deep among the sandy planes of a weapons testing facility in the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang Province late last year. Among them was the outline of a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Another matched the dimension of a US guided-missile destroyer.

Since then, the target range has reportedly expanded.

Two new targets have since appeared – and been erased.

These depicted the same sketchy scene: a warship mixed among the angular lines of a harbour’s infrastructure.

One bears the scar of an enormous impact crater in a “bullseye” on its hull.

It’s a threat the US is well aware of.

“The Chinese know very well that US satellites are monitoring and would eventually see these efforts,” US think-tank Defense Priorities director Lyle Goldstein recently told the military news service Stars and Stripes. “The Chinese leadership has made it clear in a variety of ways that they are developing the military capabilities to severely damage the US Navy.”

Day of infamy

In December 1941, Japan’s aircraft carriers slunk into the North Pacific. Then, unseen, they unleashed their aircraft on the unsuspecting warships tied up at dock – their crews largely ashore on leave.

The United States was expecting an attack at any time. Several “war warnings” had been issued to its military units worldwide.

Pearl Harbor, however, was caught unprepared.

Some 2400 Americans died. Eight battleships were among the 19 warships destroyed or damaged.

The intention was to hurt the US so bad that Washington would be incapable of intervening in Tokyo’s invasion of South East Asia. It failed.

Through pure luck, the US Navy’s aircraft carriers Enterprise, Lexington and Saratoga were at sea at the time – preserving the core of US naval capability.

Next time, the US may not be so lucky.

And Beijing appears to be working hard to tilt the odds in its favour.

The threat won’t be from aircraft carriers. Modern satellite and over-the-horizon surveillance technology negate this.

Instead, a surprise attack may come via hypersonic guided missiles – capable of flying to Hawaii from mainland China within minutes. And once they get there, their AI guidance systems will be able to find their predetermined targets.

Surprise attack

“The nature, location and strikes on these sites all suggest the targets are meant for testing ballistic missiles,” argues USNI author H.I. Sutton. “These hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) are an increasingly significant threat to warships.”

The desert targets are relatively simple.

The “piers” were represented by geometric arrangements of sheets of an unknown material laid out on the desert sands.

The “ships” were metal plates positioned among these “distractions”.

Their purpose could be to train and test guidance systems.

Notably, the target range is close to another previously used to test the development of its “carrier killer” DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missiles in 2013. Its latest weapon, the DF-17, carries a hypersonic glide vehicle that can manoeuvre along an unpredictable trajectory towards an unwitting target.

Travelling faster than 6200km/h, China’s expansive arsenal of hypersonic ballistic missiles will have mere moments to recognise the shape of a warship among the clutter of a dockyard.

“Modern targeting sensors are typically connected to artificial intelligence, allowing the missile to discern targets and choose the intended or highest-value option,” Mr Sutton writes.

If the visible impact craters are any indication, they now appear to be capable of doing so.

China has spent decades developing “carrier killer” hypersonic missiles.

But recent advances – as demonstrated by a highly unusual orbital payload deployment in June last year – suggest facilities in Hawaii and even San Diego will soon be vulnerable to these ultra-fast, non-nuclear weapons.

Armed and ready

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) argues that Beijing’s recent military doctrine and technology developments indicate a disturbing trend.

“Changes to China’s postures and technologies indicate that its concept and practice of ‘active defence’ may be converging with more forward-leaning and even pre-emptive ‘proactive defence’,” the report reads.

Active defence is defined as preparing to defend from a surprise attack.

Proactive defence is a euphemism for preparing to launch a pre-emptive, surprise attack.

The report says that the aggressive policy shift can be seen in new anti-satellite weaponry, expanded intercontinental ballistic missile silos, hypersonic missile-carrying bombers, and attack submarines.

“Over the past few years, China has displayed a wide range of advances in military capabilities and infrastructure, including its test of a hypersonic glide vehicle coupled with a fractional orbital bombardment system,” reads the report.

The US insists it will never forget the pre-emptive attack on Pearl Harbor. War had not been declared.

“Yesterday, December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan,” President Franklin Roosevelt announced to his stunned nation.

The Russian anti-aircraft cruiser Moskova appears to have been unable to defend itself from two subsonic cruise missiles. The ability of modern warships to protect themselves against hypersonic glide vehicles remains in doubt.

Late last year, the Pentagon acting director of combat testing warned the US Navy’s unproven defensive systems were “creating an unacceptable risk in our ability to evaluate the operational effectiveness and survivability of future ships in combat.”

The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post, now subject to Beijing’s oppressive media control laws, quotes Yuan Wang military science and technology institute researcher Zhou Chenming saying, “The PLA will not take pre-emptive strikes in peacetime.”

“China’s missiles, including the DF-21 carrier-killer and other weapons, were all designed for deterring and denying foreign military intervention in case of a Taiwan contingency, which will only happen if Taipei formally declares independence.”

The aggressive statements of Indian officials, strengthening its military might by increasing defense spending, hegemonic and Hindutva driven designs of government are putting entire regional peace in jeopardy, creating panic in the region. The BJP and RSS led Indian establishment making the lives of minorities miserable by attacking them and vandalizing their properties.

By increasing arms race, Indian government is playing with fire while creating chaos in the region. It will gain nothing out of it: hence it is likely to create disturb balance of power severely. Nuclearisation of South Asia by India, a deplorable step, permanently endangering the peace of this region and depriving the population of prosperous life due to diversion of resources towards an arms race. This must be stopped right now before its too late. The leaders in India must not forget that Pakistan has more sophisticated nuclear arsenals than India. It has outclassed India many times in conventional and non-conventional battlefield. The recently dog-fight between Indian Air Force and Pakistan Air Force in the aftermath of Balakot airstrikes had proved Pakistan’s strategic superiority over India when Pakistani Air Force shot down two Indian aircraft and captured pilot Wing Commander Abinandhaan. That was eye opener for India its also compelled New Delhi to reconsider its hostile approach towards Pakistan. In addition to this, Pakistan had identified more strategic targets inside India after the New Delhi’s blatant violations of Islamabad’s airspace, but it acted in a mature and responsible way. Pakistan showed its military might in retaliation only in defense. Pakistan had to compete as existential threats were posed by Indian leaders of myopic views.  Remember, it was India who violated all diplomatic and international military norms. 

Likewise, after facing humiliating defeat in dog-fight, India had decided to further enhance its strategic capabilities and for that matter it approached Russia and France for latest military equipment. New Delhi purchased latest Rafale aircraft from France to beat Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunders and F-16 aircraft. It had also signed deal with Russia worth billions of dollars to acquire S-400 missile defense system and other defense equipment such as Su-35 aircraft. All these Indian actions and deals are against the already existing international and bilateral rules, which are aimed at increasing arms race in the region. The warmongering designs of Indian government are creating hunger and poverty within the country. Instead of improving the basic life style of masses, New Delhi is interested in strengthening military might. Tens of thousands of Indian people are living below the poverty line having no access to basic necessities of life. They are dying of hunger. But, Modi government is more interested in warmongering. 

Indian liberal political elite, academicians and human rights watchdogs have vehemently denied Modi government’s priorities. They have been asking the government to focus more on health, education and human development instead of wasting money on defense sector. Even, Pakistani government asked India many times to join hands, end animosity and work for peace and stability in the region. Recently, former Prime Minister Imran Khan had asked Premier Modi to come forward and fight against hunger and poverty. He also offered to reduce defense spending and use of that money for human development. Indian government must understand that investing massively in defense sector is not good omen for human and economic development of the region. This will only create further security threat in the region. It must abandoned this approach and come forward to work for the overall economic and political integration of South Asia. 

To conclude my argument, I must say that Indian Army’s prevailing doctrine leaves the military with two main choices: do nothing or risk wars it cannot win. The Indian Army needs to rethink its use of force and must work in a professional way like Pakistan Army is working to maintain regional peace and stability.

Vladimir Putin is backed into a corner of his own doing and prepared to use nuclear weapons if his war fails, a military historian claims.

Sir Antony Beevor says the Russian President believes NATO’s ‘advance’ on his own country’s borders is the equivalent to the Nazis moving through Europe 80 years ago.

And the push for Finland and Sweden to join the alliance in recent days amid the despot’s catastrophic invasion of Ukraine will have done little to ease his misplaced suspicions.

Sir Antony, who has published several books on the Second World War, said Putin genuinely thinks the Red Army fought off Adolf Hitler’s Wehrmacht “single-handed” while the western allies wanted to “stab the Soviet Union in the back”.

Moscow’s current invasion, which it calls a “special operation” to disarm Ukraine and protect it from fascists, has jolted European
security.

Kyiv and its Western allies say the fascism assertion is a baseless pretext for an unprovoked war of aggression.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Sir Antony said: “Ultimately, he has trapped himself in a past that he fails to understand.

“He refuses to acknowledge that it is his own aggressive actions which have achieved that.

“So, combined with his bitter resentment that the West never showed proper ‘respect’ – that gangster euphemism for ‘fear’ – Putin wants to terrify us.”

Sir Antony, whose latest book Russia : Revolution And Civil War 1917-1921 is released later this month, went on to say Putin’s “own disastrous mistakes have backed him into a corner”.

He believes the former KGB intelligence officer is prepared to use nuclear weapons if “his own regime” is defeated in Ukraine.

He added: “This has created far greater dangers for the world than at any moment since 1945.”

The southeastern region of Donbas has become the main theatre of war over the past month.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive there is underway near the Russian-held town of Izium, but its military has reported that Moscow forces are advancing elsewhere.

Having resisted fiercely since Russia launched its invasion on February 24, Ukraine’s military has notched a string of successes, first forcing Russia’s commanders to abandon an advance on the capital Kyiv, and then making rapid gains in the northeast in recent week to drive the enemy away from the second biggest city of Kharkiv.

Since mid-April, Russian forces have focussed much of their firepower on the east for what has become known as the “Battle of the Donbas”.

It reckoned that Russia had lost about a third of the ground combat force deployed in February, and its offensive in the Donbas had fallen “significantly behind schedule” and was unlikely to make rapid advances during the coming 30 days.

One of the aims of Russia’s action in Ukraine was to prevent the former Soviet republic ever joining NATO.

But in a telephone call, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto told Russian President Vladimir Putin that his country, which shares a 1,300-km (800-mile) border with Russia, wanted to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to bolster its own security.

Putin told Niinisto it would be a mistake for Helsinki to abandon its neutrality, the Kremlin said, adding that the move could harm bilateral relations.

The crisis campaigns included: the dot com crisis, housing crisis, great financial crisis, a global pandemic, unlawful lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and medical tyranny.
The campaign results: The highest inflation in history. Policies that accelerated food and energy prices and amplified supply chain disruptions making shortages commonplace across America. The evisceration of middle-class America to ensure their dependency on big government.
“Let’s take out Putin; there is no off-ramp”—US Senator Lindsey Graham’s reckless and irresponsible rhetoric this week accomplished two things: 1. He increased Russophobia; and 2. he greatly increased the probability of nuclear World War III where Europe and the UK are destroyed first. Like Graham, Washington DC swamp rats, owned by the military-industrial complex (“MIC”), are the problem. He should resign or be voted out. Who wins? China. In 1961, President Eisenhower warned about the military-industrial-complex.
The US has wasted over $6 trillion in taxpayer dollars on military adventurism that no one voted for. These actions have made the world less safe.
The US has failed at any successful military deterrence since 1945. The West cannot win a war in Ukraine. Therefore, a corrupt Ukraine is of no strategic significance to the US, UK, or EU.
Why are we risking a nuclear WWIII with Russia, with over 6,000 nuclear warheads and hypersonic missiles that the West cannot defend against? All voters are against a nuclear war.
Have sanctions ever worked? No. Russia’s currency is higher and its current account has surged to record highs. Unfortunately,Nuland/Milley/Austin’s dangerous assumptions have grossly underestimated the resolve of the bloc that has joined Russia: China, Iran, Brazil, UAE, Saudi, and several additional Asian and African nations. The world is no longer unipolar. Despite Biden’s tone-deaf elites’ denial, the world has “transitioned” into multi-polarity. What sanctions have done: signalled the death of the petro-dollar and end of the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency within five years.
The US could have prevented the Ukraine/Russia war by forcing Ukraine to de-escalate immediately and settle with Russia. Simply denying Ukraine NATO membership and provisional weapons guarantees would have saved lives and prevented this war.
The dishonest political soundbite “we are saving democracy” is false on its face; Ukraine was never a democracy. Instead, the likely objective is to forcibly transition democracy into a hybrid socialism, fascism, and Marxism.
General Mark Milley and heavily conflictedDefense Secretary Lloyd Austin are running a proxy war between Russia, its partners and the West. Austin and Milley were defeated in the $2.5 trillion Afghanistan war by farmers in pickup trucks. NATO and the West need to heed Putin’swarningsandtakehisredlinesseriously.

Biden and Victoria Nuland’s MIC have based their military strategy on “media propaganda and wishful thinking,” neither of which are viable combat plans capable of defeating a nuclear-armed Russia with hypersonic missiles.
Who benefits from an unwinnable WWIII or conflict with Russia? The MIC and China. Who suffers? The people of Ukraine, with their lives, and the USA, UK, and EU taxpayers.
How did we get here?
Forty years of failed neo-liberal policies and endless wars cost lives and trillions of taxpayer dollars: reckless central bank money printing and the worldwide fiscal profligacy of our pay-to-play politicians have allowed the MIC to prosper. For these reasons, the most significant global financial crisis in history is now unavoidable.
Democratic party leaders, Hillary and Bill Clinton’s decades of deceptive practices were influenced by extremist Saul Alinsky. The Clintons excelled at creating diversions. The Clintons’ gold medal: Loudly accuse others of precisely what they were guilty of.

In 2009, a cultural revolution began in the USA. Obama/Biden breathlessly hyped this as “the transformation of America.” Unfortunately for America, Obama’s transformation directly began an attack on democratic institutions, due process, the rule of law, culture, religion, free speech, liberty, and the nuclear family.

In 2016, Hillary Clinton, the democratic party, FBI, CIA, and DOJ perpetuated the false Russiagate narrative that they dragged out for four years. Their oligarchs’ partners in Silicon Valley unlawfully influenced the results of the 2020 election by censoring factual reporting on the Biden family crime syndicate, Hunter Biden’s laptop Ukraine.

In 2020, Nina Jankowicz promoted the misinformation and false claims regarding Hunter Biden’s laptop being “Russian disinformation” and Trump’s involvement with Russia. Jankowicz now runs Biden’s personal Stasi, a Ministry of Truth that would make Joseph Gobbles and George Orwell blush.
With the unlawful appointment of Jankowicz, Biden has created a “China-style social credit system” to “protect the public from misinformation and misinformation.” Jankowicz will now weaponize the Department of Homeland Security and Silicon Valley to conduct a great purge while imposing mass censorship of all political opposition. Biden’s authoritarian power grab is the most significant existential threat to liberty, freedom, and democracy in America’s history.

Joe Biden promised America “unity.” As of May 2022, what has Biden delivered?

America’s greatest division and tribalism in our lifetime. Eye-watering inflation. An economy on the brink of collapse. Broken supply chains that caused widespread food and energy scarcity. Millions of illegal aliens and drug smugglers are invading the USA’s open southern borders with impunity. Violent crime and drug related deaths are surging, and America’s two-tiered judicial system is dysfunctional. Biden has not provided any solutions.
Biden’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki endorsed the unlawful violation of US Federal Law by doxing and intimidation of US Supreme Court Justices by stating, “We certainly continue to encourage protests outside the homes of SCOTUS justices.”
Biden’s inability to win majority mandates with “free and fair elections at the ballot box to transform America” has unmasked uncomfortable truths: 1. The extremist left turns to mob-rule violence, Antifa, BLM, or by any means necessary including violence, to ensure they get their way, and 2. the democratic process is broken.

Who funded the 2020 murders, arson, looting, and violent riots, causing $10 billion in damage across America? Why were these crimes not prosecuted?
Since 2021, Biden’s divisive rhetoric has divided and polarized over fifty per cent of America. This week, Joe Biden stated the MAGA organisation is the“most extreme political organisation that’s existed in recent American history” When people are hungry, everything changes very quickly. Biden’s record inflation is preventing Americans from providing for their families. No Americans want a nuclear WWIII or endless war expenses similar to the $2.5 trillion wasted on the Afghanistan disaster.
Biden is sending $55 billion to the most corrupt country in Europe while giving the middle finger to middle America. Biden has done nothing to resolve America’s problems. Instead, Biden’s open border policy has allowed 2,000,000 illegal aliens and drug dealers to invade America with impunity, accelerating violent crime and 300 drug overdose deaths per day.

While Biden, Schumer, and Pelosi shriek about Ukraine’s borders being sacrosanct, they have done nothing to protect America’s borders; and voters will remember this in November.
While China and Russia are laughing at America’s woke age of rage addiction, many fear America has lost its way. The extreme left has abandoned due process and the rule of law in favour of mob-rule, socialism, and Marxism. This will not end well. Who benefits? China.
